Safety First

Every open field around the world now resembled a mass grave site for giants as the containment molds were completed. A lottery was put in place to minimize a flood of people trying to get off the planet. Each empty block could hold one hundred people layered in rows of ten by ten in the unmeltable ice.

The Prime Minister of Russia personally oversaw every filling procedure to ensure his countrymen and women were safely encased. Once the block was done, a crane with a large suction cup came and lifted it out of the ground. They were then loaded onto an industrial transport that could accommodate four of the blocks. Another group of civilians waited behind the barrier for their turn.

He could see some of the children were frightened, their parents not knowing what to say to comfort them. A tanker pulled up to an empty block and opened the valve. Silver water gushed out creating the bottom layer. The hardening solution came after that. It took nearly an hour for the set up. He walked over the barrier.

“My comrades. Please be rest assured, this is a safe process. There is no pain involved. When you wake, you will be on a different planet safe from harm. And when this war is over, we can all return home.” He knelt before a little boy pressed against his mother’s thighs while clinging to a stuffed monkey. “You’ll be fine. Your mother will be right by your side.” He ruffled the boy’s hair.

“We’re ready for the first layer,” the logistics manager called out.

The first ten people were let through the barrier and escorted to the empty block. They descended via a portable lift and medical technicians stood waiting. Ten rectangles were evenly spaced across the hardened ice. Next to each one was a digital readout and tubes splayed outward. The civilians laid in the rectangles and were immediately given a sedative.

Within five minutes, they were all asleep and the technicians went to work attaching the tubes. They checked the digital readouts to make vital signs were being recorded. When their heartbeats slowed to a crawl, the manager gave the tanker a thumbs up. All the operatives and medical technicians boarded the lift. Another layer of the silver ice water washed over the sleeping beauties, sealing them in, then more hardening solution to prepare for the next group.

Have mercy on us all, the Prime Minister thought to himself.

President Lynmore watched the freezing procedure on the vidscreen in her office. Standing next to her was Quelly and George. She had heard what the operation entailed and seeing done was eye opening. She turned away from the screen after the third layer was done.

“It looks like everything is going smoothly.”

“So far, so good,” Quelly said.

“How long would it take to evacuate an entire planet, you think?”

“Years,” George answered.

“Well, we don’t have that kind of time.”

“We would be cutting it close, but everyone who wants to leave will be off this planet before the real shit hits the fan,” Quelly added.
